General Motors has deployed several web-based applications
that enable the dealer to operate efficiently and profitably. Several applications
in the GlobalConnect portal allow dealers to take their operations online
for easier management of sales, service, vehicle ordering, and so forth.
GlobalConnect is the primary connection point between dealers and General Motors and brings all operations under one online roof. From there, the dealer may access hundreds of business components that will help perform with today’s rigid marketplace demands.
Dealers can turn to www.GMDIT.com for help with their networks. This will allow GM applications to perform better and more efficiently. www.gmdit.com also houses GM Dealer IT Guidelines at www.gmdit.com/guidelines.
Dealers are also subject to various federal, state, and industry regulations:
Payment Card Industry Standards, a set of comprehensive requirements for enhancing payment account data security. Any business (auto dealers included) that uses American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB International, MasterCard Worldwide or Visa Inc. Inc. International must adhere to the standards set forth by the PCI Security Standards Council. The intent is to help facilitate the broad adoption of consistent data security measures on a global basis.
Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) and the Safeguards Rule
The Safeguards Rule forces financial institutions to take a closer look at how they manage private data and to do a risk analysis on their current processes.
Standards for Technology in Automotive Retail (STAR) is a nonprofit, dues-paying organization whose members include dealers, manufacturers, retail system providers, and automotive-related industry organizations. The goal of STAR is to use non-proprietary technology (IT) standards as a catalyst in fulfilling the business information needs of dealers and manufacturers while reducing the time and effort required to support related activity.
